Exercise and State of Mind

The Gym is Not for Everybody

I once went to a local, inexpensive gym. It was great, while it lasted. It lasted about 3 months.

In 2003 I found tree climbing. I love how climbing on rope combines strength, cardio, skill, learning, peacefulness, safety protocols, great views and photo ops, outdoors and some risk. Find something you like. I like to climb, so I climb trees and do tree work. The human peace sign pic (below) was taken from a tree. Tree work is treacherous but recreational climbing is amazingly peaceful. Remember Kevin Kline in “The Emperor’s Club?”

As I’ve gotten older, I realize I’m certain of only two things. First, days that begin with rowing on a lake are better than days that do not. Second, a man’s character is his fate.

I think of that quote fondly and often. I substitute “a climb” for rowing on a lake. There’s something so special about a regimen that combines physical fitness/strength with skill and problem solving. I’ve gotten into a few problems in the trees, some more serious than others, but because I put in a lot of time taking it “low and slow” in the beginning, and also because I carry enough accessories on my harness to improvise solutions, so far I’ve been OK.

I also like to chop wood (last few seasons without a splitter), do other yard work, mountain bike, skateboard, hike, trampoline, etc.  Even when I don’t own a property I will take paid outside work, because I like the way it keeps my hands rough and my body strong. Oh and DANCING. Good God don’t forget about that!! I’m lucky to live in a place where I can blast the music so loud it hurts. Whether out on the town or at home, it’s some of the very best exercise.

If you’re not in the mood to get your heart rate up today, then at least be good to your muscles and tendons and do some simple stretches. Hold them for as long as you can. When the mild discomfort turns to fatigue, relax, and stretch a different part. Remember to BREATHE, deeply and slowly. Breath is a Blessing! Feel how sacred it is.
